Education

MEL has close collaboration with the College of Ocean and Earth Sciences and the College of the Environment and Ecology at Xiamen University. Students who are interested in marine environmental science can find degree programs varying from undergraduate to graduate education from the above colleges. (For more information, please contact XMU Admissions Office)

MEL provides plenty of training programs for talents, such as the Outstanding Postdoctoral Fellowship, the PhD Fellowship, Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship and joint training programs for PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. Additionally, various workshops and summer schools are designed for students to systematically master theories and learn about hot spots within the various disciplines. MEL also encourages students to develop leadership skills by organizing academic activities themselves, such as the MEL Graduate Forum, University Consortium on Aquatic Sciences Symposium and Graduate Lingfeng Forum.

Academic Activities

MEL Graduate Forum

Initiated in 2016, the annual MEL Graduate Forum is organized by the Marine Environmental Science Student Association (MESSA). Students take control of the whole picture with the help of faculty advisors, from running an effective meeting, managing budgets, organizing events and everything in between. The MEL Graduate Forum provides the resources for students to develop leadership skills and to push one another to dive deeper.

With oral presentations, posters, special workshops, outreach talks and student nights, this forum has become a platform for fostering academic development and interdisciplinary networking for the next generation of scientists.

UCAS Symposium

The University Consortium on Aquatic Sciences (UCAS) was established in 2009 and is run entirely by a group of passionate postgraduate students from Xiamen University, The University of Hong Kong, Taiwan Sun Yat-sen University and Taiwan Ocean University. UCAS aims to encourage interdisciplinary networking amongst aquatic scientists across institutions, facilitate intellectual and social interactions among participants, and promote critical thinking.

Students in XMAS

The Xiamen Symposium on Marine Environmental Sciences (XMAS) has been initiated and organized biannually by MEL since 2014. However, without a diverse, motivated group of students the symposium would not happen. They are at the core of making creative warm-up videos for keynote speakers, managing media and press release needs, providing on-site support to the organizing committee, and more. Volunteer experiences give students the unique opportunity to network with all attendees from young local and international researchers to world leaders in the area of marine environmental science. Students also gain valuable experience for future scientific event organization.

Graduate Lingfeng Forum

Launched in 2011, the Graduate Lingfeng Forum aims to foster multidisciplinary communication among graduates.Initiated by MEL graduates and under the guidance of MEL faculty, it focuses on one scientific topic each time and irvites expertsand graduates to give adademic reports.
