Outreach

MEL’s outreach and education activities are implemented through interactions with MEL outreach engagement officers, scientists and technicians.

The Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence China (COSEE China), established in 2010, is a platform which seeks to bridge the gap between researchers, educators and the public. By forging links between these groups, it aims to not only enhance public awareness about the ocean but to cultivate the next generation of ocean scientists and a scientifically literate citizenry.

With the accumulation of nearly ten years of marine science communication work, the 70.8 Media Lab was officially founded on November 1, 2019 and is an integrated media platform based on a collaboration between

Faculty of Earth Science and Technology and SINA Xiamen. The 70.8 media lab is the first marine media lab created jointly by top research institutions and authoritative media in China and the first marine media lab dedicated to innovative marine science communication models aiming to become an innovative platform for the dissemination of marine science knowledge, cultivation of science talents and transformation of scientific and technological achievements in the field of marine science mass communication.

Ocean Science Day

Each November, students, labs, and faculty from the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (MEL), the College of Ocean and Earth Sciences (COE), and the College of the Environment and Ecology (CEE) open their doors to the general public. Visitors learn about the research being done at the university and the ocean in general through a range of hands on, interactive displays and booths, lab tours and guest presentations.

Aquatic Sciences Eco-Learning Programme

This 5-day camp is aimed at middle school students and designed to take them out of the classroom and into Nature. Each day focuses on a different local aquatic ecosystem and the science behind understanding it. Campers work in small counselor led groups with Xiamen University faculty, undergraduates and graduates facilitating the experience. All activities are hands on, regardless of whether they occur in the classroom, lab or the field.

Junior Blue Pioneer Program

The Junior Blue Pioneer Training Program relies on national research platforms, high-quality educational resources and teams of scientists to link outstanding young talents from across China. Through systematic training programs, innovative curriculum design and practical model reconstruction, the program cultivate young people with scientific literacy, international vision, creativity, and competitiveness.
