History

Introduction

Established in March 2005, the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (Xiamen University) (MEL) is sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). It was categorized as one of the best state key laboratories in the last two MOST nation-wide reviews (2010 and 2015). MEL is dedicated to cutting-edge research on global change.

Emphasizing theoretical and applied research, and utilizing interdisciplinary approaches and technological innovation, MEL's focus is on marine biogeochemistry and its ecosystem dynamics.

The ultimate goal of MEL is to be an internationally recognized institution in advanced marine environmental research and a platform for fostering talent and academic cooperation.

MEL strives to build a world-class ocean science research center, leading in marine biogeochemistry and related fields, with excellent training capabilities, and as an important force in serving the nation's marine strategic needs and the global maritime affairs.

Research: Anchored on basic research and committed to interdisciplinary approach and technological innovation, focus on marine biogeochemical processes and their interactions with marine ecosystems and address the response and feedback of marine ecosystems to global climate change and human activities.

Training: By attracting outstanding talents and conducting outstanding research, cultivate internationally competitive and creative future generations of ocean science.

Service: Committed to promote public ocean literacy and awareness, strive to play a leading advisory role in national sustainable ocean development, ecological civilization management, and coping with global change, and contribute Chinese wisdom to global ocean governance and building a community of shared ocean future for mankind.

History

Marine research begins at Xiamen University. Prof. Sol Felty Light's article about Branchiostoma belcheri (Gray) is published in Science.

The first Department of Oceanography in China is established.

The first Department of Oceanography in China is established.

The Institute of Environmental Science is renamed the Environmental Science Research Center.

The Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (Xiamen University) is established, sponsored by the Ministry of Education.

The Key Laboratory is promoted to State Key Laboratory of Marine Environment Science (MEL).

The Center of Major Equipment and Technology (COMET) is established.

MEL is categorized as an excellent state key laboratory during a nation-wide review sponsored by MOST.

MEL is categorized as an excellent state key laboratory for the second time during a nation-wide review sponsored by MOST.

Xiamen University's new vessel the R/V Tan Kah Kee is put into service. The Dongshan Swire Marine Station of Xiamen University is launched.

HiSea-1 & HiSea-2 small satellites are launched.

The National Observation and Research Station for the Taiwan Strait Marine Ecosystem (T-SMART) is approved by MOST.
