XMU Research Center for Marine Carbon Sink and Biogeochemical Process Approved as the First NSFC Basic Center in Marine Science

Recently, the Research Center for Marine Carbon Sink and Biogeochemical Process (simplified as the Center below) under the National Natural Science Foundation of China as applied for by the XMU College of Ocean and Earth Sciences was officially approved. It is the first Basic Science Center of National Natural Science Foundation of China in the maritime field.

The Center is headed by cademician Jiao Nianzhi of Xiamen University, with key members including XMU Professors such as Academician Dai Minhan and Professor Zhang Rui, Professor Jian Zhimin of Tongji University, and Wang Xiaoxue, researcher at the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Aiming to ‘respond to climate change and support carbon neutrality’, the Center focuses on the international frontier of basic science in marine carbon sink formation and regulatory mechanisms. Drawing on its original theory of the microbial carbon pump, the Center thoroughly and systematically studies the formation of marine carbon sinks, regulatory mechanisms and environmental effects, as well as its responses and feedbacks to climate change by integrating biology, chemistry and geology. The Center will draw intelligence from home and abroad to construct a destination for talents in marine science and build an international platform for marine carbon sink research to promote collaborative innovation and academic development.
