Dr. Yonglong Lu was elected as a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences at the Annual General Meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences on June 2nd 2022, as informed by Professor Alexander Sergeev, Academician and president of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In the congratulatory letter sent by Dr. Alexander O. Gliko, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Academician-Secretary and Head of the Division of Earth Sciences, Russian Academy of Sciences, it said that “We respect you as the outstanding scientist who significantly contributed to the applied geography, environmental ecology and sustainable development, studying environmental impact and assessing risks of emerging pollutants. You have been elected as a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences on May 30th at the Annual General meeting of the Division of Earth Sciences, and approved by the Annual General Meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences on June 2nd.”
Dr. Yonglong Lu is a chair professor at Xiamen University and a distinguished professor of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He was elected a fellow of TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences) in 2012 and a foreign member of Academia Europaea (AE) in 2019. Dr. Lu has a wide range of research interests including the ecological impacts and risk assessment of emerging pollutants, the interaction between pollution and climate changen, sustainable coastal ecosystems management, urban ecological planning and assessment, environmental management and emergency response, and environmental technology innovation and diffusion policies. He has published more than 360 papers in the above fields in international and domestic peer reviewed journals including Science, Nature, Science Advances, PNAS, Nature Communications, and Environment International. He is the founding editor-in-chief of Ecosystem Health and Sustainability jointly appointed by the Ecological Societies of America and China through a global search process, an associate editor of Science Advances, and the founder and an associate editor of Environmental Development: Transdisciplinary Journal of SCOPE.
Dr. Lu has accumulated three decades of experience in international development and in the coordination of international activities, taking leadership positions in national or multinational organizations. He is a member of the Ten-Member Group in Support of the United Nations Technology Facilitation Mechanism (UN/TFM) appointed by the UN Secretary General; past president of the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE); president of the Pacific Science Association (PSA); member of the International Resource Panel, United Nations Environment Program (UNEP/IRP); science advisor of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN); vice president of the Ecological Society of China; and committee chair on Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Chinese Society for Sustainable Development. He was an international review panelist for both Future Earth and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), two of the biggest international initiatives launched by the International Science Council, United Nations.
Dr. Lu has obtained various awards and honors from the State Council of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences and other national or international organizations, including the 2nd Prize of the National Award for Advancement of Science and Technology, 1st Prize in the Science and Technology for Promoting Development by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2nd and 3rd Prize for the Advancement of Science and Technology by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Scientist, the Green Design International Contribution Award, the SCOPE Distinguished Achievement Award, and Scientific Chinese 2019 Outstanding Contribution Award.
