Abstracts of the two talks in the Lingfeng Forum
Invited speaker: Dr. Robert H. Byrne, Distinguished Research Professor, College of Marine Science, University of South Florida
First presentation: "Equilibrium Behavior of Pb(II) in natural waters".
This presentation will describe the equilibrium chemistry of Pb(II) with special emphasis on seawater. The presentation will make the point that spectrophotometric methods have important advantages relative to other analytical procedures for observation of chemical equilibria. Notably, the absorbance spectra of distinct chemical species can be used investigate the chemical composition of seawater.
Second presentation: "Spectrophotometric CO2-system Measurements -Principles and Practice".
This presentation will describe approximately twenty years of progress in the development and use of spectrophotometric procedures for investigation of freshwater and marine CO2-system chemistry. Much of the presentation will involve descriptions of methods and applications for pH measurements. Discussion of applications will include extensive observations in the North Pacific and South Atlantic Oceans, and the characteristics of autonomous instruments for both shipboard and in situ CO2 system measurements.
