Abstract
It has been well known that very strong internal tides are generated in the Luzon Strait and propagate into the South China Sea (SCS). These strong internal tides have important effects on large-sale circulation, ecological environment and sediment dynamics. Using mooring data and numerical models, we investigate the evolution and dissipation of internal tides on the continental slope in the SCS. The results reveal that the reflection of internal tides at upper and bottom boundaries causes strong dissipation of internal tidal energy and generates permanent unidirectional flows. Generation of these unidirectional flows can affect large-scale circulation and along-/cross-slope water exchange in the SCS. Furthermore, breaking of internal tides on the continental slope can redistribute bottom sediments to deform the continental slope.
