Mangroves are ecosystems known for their carbon storage and contaminant retention properties. They make an important contribution to what is known as blue carbon. But the storage of organic carbon in mangrove sediments is not uniform and depends on a number of factors, which calls for better stock assessment. What's more, these systems are under pressure from urbanization, land use and global climate change, all of which threaten this protective role. For example, it is possible that the erosion and destruction of older mangroves could make these systems sources of contaminants and CO2. This presentation will outline some of the dynamics of carbon stocks in sediments and the role of organic matter in the fate of metal contaminants.

Dr. Stéphane Mounier holds a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry - University of Toulon (1990), a Master's degree in Chemistry - University of Montpellier II (Scien. et Tech Du Languedoc) (1993) and a PhD in Geosciences - Pierre and Marie Curie University (1997). He is currently an associate professor at the University of Toulon. He has a background in chemistry, with a focus on trace analysis and environmental chemistry, working mainly on the following topics: organic matter, fluorescence, complexing properties, dpasv and Amazonia.
Dr. Stéphane MOUNIER is a member of the International Humic Substance Society (IHSS) and president of the French chapter. He has organized several international workshops on spectroscopy of organic matter, and was director for 8 years of the French laboratory PROTEE in Toulon, then became co-head of the chemistry team of the laboratory Institut d'Océanologie Méditerranéenne (MIO) during a merger between PROTEE and MIO. The latter depends on the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), the Institute of Research for Development (IRD) and the Universities of Marseille and Toulon.
His research focuses on organic matter in water and soils. He has published 93 papers (with 4277 citations and h-index 34 in Google Scholar). After working for several years on the organic matter of Amazonian soils, he worked on coastal areas and in particular on the interaction of organic matter with contaminants. Recent work focuses on the characterization of organic matter by 3D fluorescence, on the blue carbon and contaminants balance of the mangrove under anthropogenic stress.
