题目1An introduction of the University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment

主讲人:蔡卫君 教授

来访单位:特拉华大学

讲座内容:

Since 1970, College of Earth, Ocean and Environment (CEOE) in University of Delaware is always at the leading edge of education and research on coupled natural and human systems. Concerns such as climate change, globalization and migration, marine pollution, watershed degradation, energy independence and fisheries decline are at the heart of the work at CEOE. With a long history of collaboration with MEL, it would be a great opportunity to know more the college and the CEOE-MEL collaborative program with Prof. Weijun Cai, Associate Dean for Research and Mary A.S. Lighthipe Chair of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, with us in MEL.

个人介绍:

Dr. Wei-Jun Cai obtained his B.S. in Oceanography in 1982 from Xiamen University, Xiamen, China, M.S. in Marine Chemistry in 1985 from the Shandong College of Oceanography (now Ocean University of China), Qingdao, China, and Ph.D. in Oceanography in 1992 from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California at San Diego, La Jolla, CA, USA. He was a professor in the Department of Marine Sciences, University of Georgia from 1994 to 2012 and is currently Mary A. S. Lighthipe Chair Professor of Earth, Ocean and Environment at the University of Delaware. He is an author of over 250 peer-reviewed publications (H index = 80; https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=7i0r93YAAAAJ&hl=en). For his distinguished academic accomplishment, Dr. Cai was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2021, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) in 2017, Geochemical Society (GS) and European Association of Geochemistry (EAG) in 2021, and the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) in 2017.

题目2Rapid ocean acidification in the US East Coast due to a shifting Gulf Stream

摘要:

The United States East Coast has experienced rapid coastal surface ocean acidification, yet the mechanisms driving this trend remain largely unexamined. Using the comprehensive 20-year observational and reanalysis data, we reveal a rapid coastal acidification over decadal timescales along the East Coast, characterized as rapid increase in the sea surface partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) and decrease in pH. This coastal acidification is primarily driven by mixing process due to reduction of total alkalinity influx in the southern region, and by thermodynamic changes due to increasing temperature and salinity in the northern region. Both phenomena are linked to Gulf Stream’s northward and shoreward shift. These findings are particularly significant given that projections suggest the Gulf Stream's deceleration and the warming of the northwest shelf are likely to continue, thereby potentially exacerbating coastal acidification along the East Coast in the future.

个人介绍:

Zelun Wu is a dual-degree Ph.D. student at Xiamen University and the University of Delaware. He is under the guidance of Dr. Xiao-Hai Yan and Dr. Wei-Jun Cai. His Ph.D. research focuses on the coastal inorganic carbon chemistry of the North American Coast, in particular of its relationship with physical processes like large-scale ocean circulations. Additionally, he has a keen interest in remote sensing and extreme weather events, contributing as a co-author to several remote sensing journal articles. He has submitted a paper on air-sea CO2 flux in the Gulf of Mexico and is currently exploring the dynamics governing the interannual and decadal variabilities of air-sea CO2 flux along the North American Coast.
