Abstract:
X-ray micro computed-tomography (micro-CT) is a technique that produces high resolution (micron to sub-micron) image stacks that can be used to generate digital three-dimensional models of samples. Here we will show how we adopted this technique into biodiversity research for some deep-sea macrobenthos: 1) we used it to track the key diagnoses for species delimitation of some deep-sea scyphozoan polyps; 2) to illuminate the hidden complex symbiotic behavior of coral-sipunculian-polychaete system; 3) to construct the 3D anatomy of a deep-sea brachiopod species, and discuss its potential adaptive strategies.
