Abstract:
Since the second half of the 20th Century, the synthesis of new chemicals has experienced an exponential growth. Negative effects of the contaminants on the environment and human health became apparent soon after their widespread release into the environment. Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), the emerging contaminants, are the major class of cationic surfactants used as the ingredients in fabric softeners, disinfectants, biocides, detergents, phase transfer agent and numerous personal care products. QACs have a positively charged quaternary nitrogen atom containing four functional groups, which readily adsorb negatively charged sludge and suspended particles. We found that QACs contributed to about 70% of the mass inventory of the legacy and emerging organic contaminants (> 100 chemicals) in the surface sediments of Pearl River Estuary, China. The contaminants are widespread not only on land but also in the open ocean. With the development of plastic pollution, microplastices have been the emerging contaminant and the carrier of pollutants. Up to now, microplastices have been documented in all marine environments, from coastlines to the open ocean, from the sea surface to the sea floor, in deep-sea sediments and even in Arctic sea ice. It is an urgent issue to research the environmental consequences of this contamination.
