Linking Engineers and Scientists in New Ways to Observe the Ocean – David Packard’s Unique Gift and Vision
工程师与科学家共同以新的方式观测海洋—DavidPackard之独特天赋与视角
时间:11月12日(星期五)晚上7:30-9:00
In 1987 David Packard, statesman and a legendary founder of Hewlett-Packard (now HP), created the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) with the mission to excel in developing better instruments procedures and methods to study the deep ocean, and to do so uniquely by forging peer relationships between engineers and scientists. Now that 20 years have gone by how well has this mission been achieved? Today MBARI has made advances in taking laser Raman spectroscopy thousands of meters deep in the ocean, in creating molecular biological tools that work remotely on buoys and on the sea floor, and in developing sensors that rapidly measure nutrients on ARGO floats that circulate for thousands of miles, each revolutionizing their field and with amazing video to prove it. My own experience supports this vision and I show examples of work on methane hydrates, ocean CO2disposal and the way in which this led to world-wide ocean acidification studies, and unusual ROV carried experiments that shed light on the challenges facing ocean life in a climate-changed world.
