Remote sensing of absorption coefficients, phytoplankton pigments, and phytoplankton community composition in theUSnortheast coast

The current satellite remote sensing of coastal water quality and constituent concentrations is subject to large errors as compared to the capability of satellite sensors in oceanic waters. In this study, field measurements collected in the U.S. northeast coast were applied to improve retrievals of satellite ocean color products of absorption coefficients (phytoplankton, CDOM, and detritus) and phytoplankton pigments (Chlorophylla,b,c, fucoxanthin, alloxanthin, zeaxanthin, etc) from SeaWiFS and MODIS-Aqua. The validation match-ups showed that the mean absolute percent differences were typically close to 35%. The retrievals of phytoplankton pigments were further applied to a chemotaxonomic method (CHEMTAX) to study the temporal and spatial variations of phytoplankton community composition. Field and satellite observations in this region showed that: 1) CDOM plays an important role in contributing to absorption, and impacts the accurate retrievals of Chl_afrom operational algorithms (OC4V4, OC3M); 2) The distributions of phytoplankton pigments are consistent with seasonal and spatial variations of phytoplankton species; 3) Diatoms are typically the most abundant phytoplankton group to obscure co-blooms of other phytoplankton during winter and spring, but higher densities of other phytoplankton (e.g. dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria) are likely to occur during summer.
