Maximizing the power of remote sensing in the ocean observing era

Satellite remote sensing provides synoptic and frequent measurements of the surface ocean, therefore can potentially reduce spatial/temporal aliasing from infrequent field measurements when assessing temporal trend and anomaly conditions of several key parameters. As algorithms continue to improve in recent years, more effort has been dedicated towards establishing the various coastal ocean observing systems (COOS) in theUnited States. Here, using several examples, I show some recent progress in algorithm/data product development and in the application of these products in addressing Earth science questions. Specifically, high-resolution (1 km2per image pixel) products of sea surface temperature (SST) and water quality (turbidity, water clarity) products have been developed and validated, and applied to study their temporal trends in estuaries. In contrast, quantifying algae blooms in coastal waters has always been problematic due to a number of reasons. However, a novel ocean color index, namely thefloating algae index (FAI), was developed and proven effective in studying algae floating on the water surface when they form mats. FAI imagery derived from MODIS and Landsat satellite data at 250-m and 30-m resolution, respectively, have been used to detect macroalgae in the global oceans and to study cyanobacteria blooms inTaihu Lake,China. These new techniques show the power of satellite remote sensing in the ocean observing era, whose results are difficult or impossible to achieve otherwise.
